It is used in 1,4-cyclo polyketone and polycondensation as a dienophile. The largest single use of maleic anhydride is in the production of unsaturated polyesters for use in fiber reinforced plastics in automotive, construction, marine, consumer goods and agricultural industries. It is the production of unsaturated polyester resins, lubricants, motor oil additives, copolymers, fumaric acid, agrochemicals, malic acid, sulfosaxinic acid esters, alkenyl succinic anhydrides and alkyd resins. It is also used in the production of auxiliary sweeteners, flavor enhancers, water treatment chemicals, hairsprays, medicines and agrochemicals.
